Catch the Rain. Grow the Shade. Feed the Pool.
What a neighborhood can learn from the forest floor.

Under every healthy forest there is a second forest you cannot see.
Beneath the soil, threads finer than hair spread out in every direction and connect the roots of one tree to the roots of another. Fungi build this web. Scientists call the threads mycelium. A single teaspoon of living soil can hold miles of it. The mushrooms we notice above ground are only the fruit. The real body of the fungus is underground, everywhere, holding the whole place together.
That web moves things. Water. Carbon. Minerals. When one tree has more than it needs, some of what it has can move through the network toward a tree that has less. Nothing about this requires a headquarters. No tree files a request. No office approves the transfer. The forest floor has been doing this for hundreds of millions of years, quietly, with no permission from anyone.
I have had my hands in this work. I have planted, grown, and harvested mushrooms in the wild and in facilities, and it changed how I see a neighborhood. Because a neighborhood is a forest floor too. The connections are already there. The abilities are already there. What is usually missing is the willingness to move what we have toward the people who need it, and the honesty to send back what we learn so the next street does it better.
This is a piece about water. It is also a piece about that second, hidden way of surviving together.
The phone that does not ring back
Here is a true story from this summer, and it is the reason I am writing this now.
In northern Minnesota, funds allocated for clearing forests and reducing wildfire risk were frozen and delayed. As a result, crucial prevention work never took place. More than a hundred Forest Service employees in the state were no longer on the job. Then, in early July, fires ignited in the Boundary Waters, consuming over sixty thousand acres.
I am not writing that to make you despair. I am writing it because it is the clearest picture I know of a dead trunk. An institution that was supposed to move help toward a community went quiet. The phone did not ring back. And the fire did not wait.
You have likely encountered your own form of that silence: a call that yields no response, an office that never answers, a program that exists only on paper. Confronted with that silence, it is easy to believe that nothing can be done.
The forest floor answers that differently. When a tree dies, the network does not shut down. Life routes around the dead trunk. The nutrients still move. They just find another path.
That is what a neighborhood can do. Not wait for the trunk to come back to life. Route around it.
Start with the rain
Water is where this becomes real, because water may be falling on your roof right now for free, and in much of this country we let almost all of it run straight into a storm drain and leave.
Think about how much of America is thirsty. The Colorado River, which a large share of the West depends on, is over-promised and shrinking. Drought has spread across most of the country in recent years. Families in some places cannot trust what comes out of the tap. This is not one region's problem. It is a national one, and it is not going away on its own.
A single household cannot restore an entire river. However, a household can start by retaining some of the rainwater that falls on it, rather than letting it all run off. I have done this myself in the Phoenix area, where I collected rain and used it in aquaponics systems I constructed. That is the first small, genuine step: catch some of the rain.
From there, the idea expands. Captured rainwater can be used to establish climate-appropriate plants. Over time, these plants provide shade, which cools homes and yards, protects soil, and offers habitat for birds and insects that bare ground cannot support. Deep roots and healthy soil enable future rain to soak in rather than run off. When water is absorbed where it falls, you are doing more than filling a barrel: you are supporting the soil, the creeks downstream, and the shared groundwater beneath your feet.
Catch the rain. Grow the shade. And underneath both, tend the water your whole community depends on.
This is not only about barrels
I am going to be honest about scale, because you deserve that and because this platform lives or dies on telling the truth.
One rain barrel does not save a drought state. Neither does one garden or one shade tree. If anyone tells you a single household trick will fix a national water crisis, they are selling something.
What matters is not the barrel. It is the pattern. The barrel is the first visible act of a neighborhood learning to keep water in its own ground. And rain capture is only one door in. Your neighborhood's version might be a shared tool library so ten families do not each buy a machine that sits idle. It might be an organized recycling route that keeps material and money in the community. It might be a food-growing plot, a repair day, a shared ride system, a composting program that rebuilds the soil.
Or it might be something nobody handed you at all. Picture a woman in an apartment complex who notices the water leaving the shared laundry room. Every wash sends a little more plastic lint and microfiber down the drain toward the same storm channel her kids walk past. She is tired. She is not a scientist. But she can see it. And that seeing is the whole beginning. A team can take that on with her: learn where the water actually goes, learn what other people have tried, a simple lint catch, a filter, a change in how the machines are run, then test it, measure it, and write down what worked. She does not need to wait for an expert or the next election for her family's water to get a little cleaner. She needs a team willing to learn the problem beside her.
The water build is the example I am walking through here. The real lesson is: find the thing your block already half-knows how to do, or has no idea how to do yet, and organize it.
You do not have to start from nothing
Some of the best proof is already in the ground, in cities on opposite coasts.
In Baltimore, people have been greening some of the city's hardest blocks one tree at a time. The Baltimore Tree Trust, a nonprofit, has planted close to fifteen thousand trees, trained hundreds of residents to plant and care for them, and even torn up pavement to cool streets down. Some of the people doing that planting came out of prison and found honest, paid work putting roots in the ground. And here is the part that matters most: neighbors started claiming the trees. That is my tree. People began squabbling, in a good way, over whose tree was whose.
Closer to my own home, in San Jose, Our City Forest has planted upwards of one hundred thousand shade trees across the Santa Clara Valley since 1994. They run a community nursery, their certified arborists teach residents how to plant and care for trees, and every tree is matched with a Tree Steward who looks after it for its first three years. Their stewardship keeps more than nine in ten trees alive. Santa Clara County has partnered with them to bring canopy to the neighborhoods with the least shade and the most heat. Some of those neighborhoods are where I taught and lived.
That is ownership taking root, in the most literal sense. And it points to something important about how this works. Seven Years of Change is not here to start a competing tree group where a good one already exists. When something is already working in your community, you do not rebuild it. You connect to it, you strengthen it, you add the piece that is missing. The forest floor does not grow a second network next to a healthy one. It joins the one that is already there.
What the work gives back
There is an old way of describing work like this: teach the next person to take your place, then step aside. That is true as far as it goes, but it misses the larger gift, and mushrooms are what showed me the fuller picture.
The mycelium network does not simply train a replacement thread. It carries what the whole system has learned, where the water is, where the danger is, back across the network, so the entire forest is better fed, not just the next tree in line. What moves is not a successor. It is knowledge, earned by doing, returned to the shared pool.
So the third step here is not only teaching a replacement. It is feeding the pool. When your team tries a rain build, you will learn things no article could have told you. What your soil actually did. Where the water actually went. What your county actually required. What failed, what it cost, what you would change. That hard-won knowledge is among the most valuable things you produce, because it means the next family does not begin from zero and does not repeat your mistake.
And is this not a good place for the neighborhood's children to enter the work? Useful, helpful neighborhood work, tied back to schooling and learning. I used to remind my students that most learning happens outside a classroom, and that it can be messy. This is exactly the kind of messy, real learning that stays with a young person for life.
Catch the rain. Grow the shade. Feed the pool.
The real goal: protect the watershed
A barrel is where a household starts. A watershed is what a whole community is actually tending.
A watershed is simply all the land that drains to the same water: the same creek, the same river, the same aquifer, the same stretch of coast. Everyone living in it shares its health, whether they know the word or not. The ultimate goal of this work, for your block, your community, and your wider region, is watershed protection, restoration, and enhancement, as far as your local and state authorities allow and encourage.
When one household keeps rain in the ground, it helps a little. When a neighborhood does it, and then neighborhoods across a region begin trading what they learn and move help toward the places that need it most, the water table steadies, the creeks run cleaner, the soil holds, and the living things that depend on that water start to come back. That is the difference between a nice barrel and a healthier watershed. The barrel is the first thread. The watershed is the whole network, and protecting it is the point.

A word before you read these, because it matters more than the list
When people see seven roles with tidy titles, a quiet fear shows up. I do not know how to do any of that. That is not me. I want to answer that fear directly, because I spent years watching students freeze over the very same thing, terrified of getting something wrong.
You do not need to already know how to do these. That is the entire point of a team. A seat is not a prize for people who already have the skill. It is a place to learn by doing, next to other people learning the same way. Nobody arrives knowing catchment math or water law. They learn it because they took the seat and started.
I have never been afraid to fail, because failing is where I have done most of my learning. A team is built so that no one carries that risk alone. You try, you get it wrong, you write down what you learned, and the whole team gets smarter, including you. As the team works, everyone's skills and knowledge rise together. If you are willing to learn, willing to try, and willing to work with people toward something your family actually needs, you are already qualified. That is the one qualification that cannot be taught, and you already have it.
Seven people around one build
Seven Years of Change organizes work in teams of seven. Not a hierarchy. Seven areas of responsibility gathered around one useful build. An odd number also means a decision cannot end in a tie. In the beginning, one person may cover more than one seat, and the team can grow toward the full seven. One rule holds from the start: no one approves their own safety decision, their own structural work, or their own legal conclusion.
These are the seven seats on a water team. Read each one as something you take on and learn, not something you must already know:
Water Lead — the one who takes on learning how much rain the roof can catch, and how the water moves once it is caught. Roof size, rainfall, tank and barrel sizing, screens, inlets, overflow, and how much water the plants will actually need. You do not start knowing this. You learn it as the person who owns this question for the team.
Site Lead — the one who learns the land itself. Soil, slope, drainage, where water travels, buried utilities, foundations, and the effect on the neighbor next door. The rule this seat protects: water must never be sent against a foundation, across an unsafe walkway, or onto someone else's property.
Green Lead — the one who learns what should grow here. Native and locally appropriate plants chosen for the real site, not copied from another climate. Mature size, water needs, survival through the hard first years, and soil care. This seat leans on local native-plant experts, university extension offices, and conservation districts rather than guessing.
Legal and Permits Lead — the one who learns what is actually allowed. State water law, city and county codes, tank and plumbing rules, HOA or landlord permission, and well conditions, and who writes down the source, the date, the office, and the answer. A spoken "should be fine" is not enough for anything that matters. This is a seat of patience and record-keeping, not a law degree.
Materials and Build Lead — the one who learns what to build with and how to build it safely. Safe containers with known histories, sound fittings, stable foundations, proper tools and protective gear, utility locating, and a real maintenance plan. Many sellers on Craigslist and community forums will tell you which barrels are food grade and which are not; part of this seat is learning to ask.
Care Lead — the one who keeps the build tied to an actual human being. Who does this serve? Can an elder or a disabled resident reach the controls? Does it raise anyone's rent or risk? Who maintains it after the first excitement fades? This seat needs no technical training at all. It needs someone who pays attention to people, so the project never becomes an impressive object that helps no one.
Ledger Lead — the one who records what actually happened. The need, the site, the people, the money, the labor, the approvals, the water stored, the plants that lived and died, the savings, the mistakes, the open questions, and what the next team should change. This is how you feed the pool. If you can tell the truth and keep notes, you can hold this seat.
Build it in phases
Phase zero, before you spend a dollar. Pick one willing site and one real need. Map the roof, the slope, the drainage, the soil, the buried utilities. Find out what your location actually allows, in writing, from official sources. Choose something the team can maintain. Set a budget. Write down the starting conditions.
Phase one, one small, lawful, above-ground build. Keep the first system above ground. Lawful storage capacity, a secure lid, screened inlets, a stable base, a controllable outlet, and a safe overflow route, with a small planting of the right native plants. Treat the water as non-drinkable. Watch one real rainfall before you do anything more. Learn how fast it fills, where the overflow goes, whether the base holds, whether the plants are actually helped.
Phase two, add capacity slowly. Only after the first system works, consider more storage where lawful, more planting, shared purchasing, paid installation and maintenance work, or a second household build. Buried tanks are not a weekend project. They involve permits, excavation safety, structural load, and real hazards, and they need professional design and review.
Phase three, living shade and shared capacity. Over time, native plantings can cool homes and yards, protect soil, slow runoff, support wildlife, and reduce how much treated water a household needs. Measure it rather than promise it. Track what survives, what it saved, what it cost, and what you would tell the next team.
The four returns
A build worth repeating should aim at four returns at once, and the Ledger should be able to show them:
People helped. Real relief for a real person, shade, lower bills, useful skills, safer and healthier days.
Money saved or earned. Less treated water bought, damage prevented, paid work created, equipment shared, the next build made cheaper.
Ownership kept local. The barrels, tanks, tools, records, knowledge, and any future enterprise stay with the community, not with an outsider or outside organization.
Harm to the living world reduced. Less runoff and erosion, less bare soil, less demand on strained supplies, more habitat, healthier ground.
The honest boundary
I will always say plainly what this is and is not.
The pieces of this are real. Rainwater harvesting is a real practice. Native planting is a real practice. Communities really can build skills, assets, and shade through work like this. But the full combination, done the Seven Years of Change way, has not yet been proven at scale, and I have never pretended otherwise. This is a water idea still in development. Every site needs its own current legal and technical review. The first build should stay small and measurable. The open questions belong in the Ledger, not swept under it. Your local free legal clinic may offer some help, especially when they hear a neighborhood is engaging in something good like this.
Unproven does not mean ignored. It means: try it carefully, tell the truth about it, protect people, write down what happened, and let the next team begin with better information than you had.
That is the forest floor's oldest lesson. No single thread saves the tree. The network does, by moving what it has learned to wherever it is needed next.

Before you build anything, read this twice
This is the most important section on the page, so I am going to be plain.
Nothing on this website is permission to build anything. This platform is not a water authority, a plumber, an engineer, or a lawyer, and it will never pretend to be. It has been clear and up front about everything it proposes, asks, and suggests.
Water law is real, and it is different in every state, and sometimes in every city and county. Some places encourage rainwater harvesting and even offer tax credits. At least one state strictly limits how much you may store. Some properties sit under wells, HOAs, or local codes that change the picture completely. What is fully legal on one street may not be on the next.
Here is something I want you to see with your own eyes, because it is the whole reason for this warning. While preparing this piece, I looked at what several websites claimed the law was. Some of them confidently described state programs, permit rules, and tax credits that do not exist. They were written to sound official. They were wrong. If a family had trusted them, they would have followed a rule that was never real. I had warned the AI research tools I use to rely only on government and university sources for lawful, accurate information, and one of them still reached for those bad blogs. That is exactly why a human being has to check.
So the rule of this work is simple, and it does not bend: before you build, confirm what is actually allowed with your own city, your own county, and your own state water authority. Use official government sources. Talk to recognized, licensed experts, plumbers, engineers, universities and their extension offices and departments, conservation districts, for anything beyond a small, simple setup. A friendly blog is not an authority. This page is not an authority. Your government, your universities, and licensed professionals are. The responsibility to check is yours, and checking is the first real act of building.
That is not a discouragement. It is the difference between a project that lasts and a project that hurts someone. Seven Years of Change was built as a nonviolent way for people of conscience and faith to take positive action that helps each other live better in hard times.
